United Church Seasons of Service
We will facilitate and encourage the natural, concentrated times of volunteering/service which already occur by individual congregations in our communities. This is consistent with the Service segment of our main strategic focus areas of Prayer, Service, and Christian Leadership Relationships.
The identified natural, concentrated times of volunteering appear to be grouped around both times of the year and “focus themes.” These general groupings include (1) Spring, with a clean-up and revitalization service emphasis, (2) Fall with a Back-to-School school/teacher/student service emphasis and (3) Thanksgiving/Christmas with a compassion and helping those in need emphasis.
The proposed seasons for 2012 (with a general time frame for these annually) are:
Spring neighborhood clean-up/revitalization - Easter (April 9th) through the National Day of Prayer (May 3rd)
Back-to-School support, including backpacks, uniforms, and school clean-up - beginning the weekend before teachers return to school (August 4th) through Labor Day (September 3rd)
Thanksgiving/Christmas Season - November 15th through December 24th
The united season of service would be coordinated with City Connections, local governments/agency services, school districts and ministries. The support and coordination tool, Meet the Need, will be encouraged and supported for churches and ministries to utilize for any projects they may plan for these community service efforts.
